Are Your Hormones Making You Depressed 

Women struggling with their hormones is a common issue today and is thought to be getting worse because of food, environmental body/beauty care  toxins, as well as continuous daily stress.

All these things knock your hormones out of whack in a big way!

This can be a huge problem and really effect your day to day health and happiness.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of hormone imbalances include:

  • Infertility
  • Irregular periods
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Digestive issues
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Hair loss/thinning

Causes of Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalances are caused by a combination of factors such as your diet, medical history, genetics, stress levels and exposure to toxins from your environment.

Some of the major causes to hormonal imbalances are:

  • Food allergies and gut issues:
  • Being overweight
  • High levels of inflammation caused by a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle
  • Toxicity (exposure to pesticides, toxins, viruses, smoking excessive and chronic alcohol intake
  • Continuous stress and poor sleep

Balancing and treating hormonal imbalance isn’t easy as there’s always more than one thing going on, it’s a little bit like a detective game because issues tend to feed in to each other if that makes sense.

However what we do know is a huge and really helpful part of balancing your hormones naturally is addressing any emotional imbalances that you’re  dealing with.

You can do this by reducing your stress levels, engaging in personal reflection and taking time for yourself.

Practicing meditation or healing prayer can be extremely beneficial, and so can deep breathing exercises, for relaxation, spending time outdoors and exercising every day. Yoga and mindfulness meditation can really help with balancing your emotions and have worked exceptionally well for me.

Your emotions and hormones are connected, so by working to balance one, you are impacting the other. If you are ever feeling stressed, angry, agitated or fearful, understand that in turn this is affecting your hormone balance too and can therefore lead to even bigger health issues.

Prioritise working on your emotional balance by making it part of your daily routine.

For me supplementation has been key to balancing my hormone issues. I supplement through nutrition tablets but also through essential oils for emotional and physical supplementation.

Today it’s necessary to supplement in order to fill a nutritional void that can lead to hormonal imbalance.

My top go to essential oils are:

 Clary sage:  helps to balance estrogen levels because it contains natural phytoestrogens. It can be used to regulate your menstrual cycle, relieve PMS symptoms, treat infertility and PCOS, and even reduce the chances of uterine and ovarian cancer. It also serves as a natural remedy for emotional imbalances, like depression and anxiety.

Diffuse 3-5 drops of clary sage to help balance hormone levels and relieve stress. To ease cramps and pain, massage 5 drops of clary sage with 5 drops of fractionated coconut oil into your stomach and any other area of concern such as tender breasts.



  • Lavender: Lavender oil promotes emotional balance, as it can help to treat anxiety, depression, moodiness and stress. It can also be used to promote restful sleep, which will help to balance your hormone levels as well. Diffuse 5 drops of lavender at home, add 5 drops to a warm water bath or apply 3 drops topically to your temples, back or neck or wrists.


  • Sandalwoodcan be used to increase your libido, reduce stress, promote relaxation, boost mental clarity and even help you to relax. The powerful fragrance triggers peaceful feelings and results in the overall reduction of stress that can lead to hormone imbalances. Inhale sandalwood directly from the bottle, diffuse it at home or apply 2-3 drops to your wrists and bottoms of the feet.
