Ever heard of the phrase “Piss Poor Planning Promotes Piss Poor Performance”?
My brother, (a military man) has said it to me on more than one occasion and it’s stuck with me…☺️
It’s that time of year again and you have high hopes of making big and lasting positive changes to your health, wealth and happiness. It all starts out great, but by midyear your motivation dwindles and old habits slowly start to creep in. Sadly, before you know it your momentum has halted and you’re back to where you started, and this time with a little less confidence, belief in yourself and hope for the future.
So, why do some people achieve their goals, and make their dreams a reality and others just don’t?
For most of my twenties I winged any small success I had, it wasn’t until I found the path of Buddhism, Yoga and self-awareness that I started to really connect with my goals, what I wanted from life and what I needed to change to make it happen.
We all have self-sabotaging habits and its self-awareness that allows us to plan for them in advance. By acknowledging and seeing your faults or self-sabotaging behaviours, you can spot them when they arise and learn to manage them in a self-compassionate way.
Don’t Listen to the naysayers
Don’t listen to the naysayers who judge and mock those who dare to want more, dream bigger, or even just get a little healthier…
Not planning is a certain “plan” for you to have more of the same this time next year, and that’s exactly how their year will be!
So unless you’re content with that, then I would suggest making a few adjustments and setting some goals for 2018!
Self-reflection is essential to your growth. Before you can make any changes you need to understand who you are, why you behave the way you do, what drives you and why have you formed the habits of life that you now want to change. What’s held you back historically, and what’s changed for you to want to move forward? All these questions are crucial to you having a clear vision of what you want, where you’ve come from and where you’re going. Only then can you start setting goals and developing a plan to achieve them, while making sure you’re aware of any pitfalls or potential hazards that may arise.
2) Forgive yourself for being human
Let go of judgment and practice some self-compassion. One of the biggest causes of procrastination is fear of failure and perfectionism. Perfectionism when understood is really just about never actually feeling good enough. Perfectionism leads to procrastination and sadly in the end just giving up. By learning to practice self-compassion you’re letting go of never feeling good enough, and praising yourself for just being exactly who you are, where you are right now. This form of self-acceptance helps you let go of the heavy burden of fear and doubt, so you can move forward and just start giving things a go, step by step.
Accept that you will lose momentum, have bad days and sometimes just simply fuck up! Accept the journey, accept the good times and the hard. If you practice acceptance you’re more able to go with the flow of the inevitable up’s and downs of change, and therefore you’re far less likely to give up!
4) Be Specific and Realistic
If you’re goals are too vague and undefined, you’ll never gain traction. To stay focused and take the right action you need to be super clear and super specific. Having a general goal like lose weight or get fit will leave you without clear steps of what to do and when to do it. To make a clear plan which leads you to your final goal work backwards. Set the goal, then trace goal back to planning exactly the steps you need to do to get there.
5) Surround yourself with like-minded people
How often are you surrounded by negative people who dismiss your dreams, and sabotage you achieving your goals by encouraging poor habits. It’s crucial to surround yourself with the right people to continuously feel supported, inspired and encouraged to succeed. Remember, you become who you surround yourself with, good or bad… So surround yourself with those who you aspire to be like. This way you’re also kept accountable to owning your full responsibility in keeping to your plan. No one can make your dreams come true but you!
